In July 2019 a group of tutors and enthusiasts gathered at Alqueria de Rosales to immerse themselves in Islamic geometry for 8 days at the first Alqueria de Rosales Summer School in Islamic Geometric Patterns.
The core aim of the course was to convey the fundamentals and further development of Islamic Geometric Patterns, focussing on the principles and possibilities of the star-rosette patterns which are one of the most distinctive and admired aspects of Islamic ornamental design. It centred on the construction of these patterns by hand using the simple tools of ruler and compass and covered a broad selection of these patterns, from well-known classics to highly sophisticated masterpieces.
The main sessions, which ran for beginners and intermediate level particpants simultaneously, were supplemented by clinic sessions where participants could ask tutors specific questions or develop their technical skills, and a series of expansive evening lectures given by Daud Sutton giving deep insights into this rich art form. There was also time for personal reflection, consolidation of learning, socialising with other participants and enjoying the natural surroundings.
Attended by participants with varied experience from all over the world, practical sessions and lectures were tailored to communicate the breadth of the art form. Combined with a restorative environment located in the Andalusian mountains and excellent food catering for all dietary requirements made by the staff at Rosales, it was a wonderfully immersive experience.
